The Wiener Riesenrad is one of Vienna’s landmarks and attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every year. The history
It was built in 1897 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Josef I’s throne and was the largest Ferris wheel in the world at the time. While there are now larger and more modern Ferris wheels, the Wiener Riesenrad has still retained its charm and allure.
The Wiener Riesenrad has a long history that is also linked to the history of Vienna. It was badly damaged during World War II and had to be rebuilt afterwards. It was also a place where famous personalities like Sigmund Freud or Gustav Klimt spent their time.
During the corona pandemic, the Wiener Riesenrad stopped for the first time in 73. On May 29, 2020, it will be ceremonially put back into operation by Vienna’s Mayor Michael Ludwig.
The Ferris wheel today
Before entering the Ferris wheel, you have to go through the Panorama Museum. The tour leads through 2000 years of Viennese history and Prater stories, which are exhibited in wagons.
Finally, you climb into one of the 15 wooden wagons. The Ferris wheel is 65 meters high and offers a unique view of the city. A round lasts about 12 to 15 minutes and meanwhile you can admire the impressive landscape. One can see the historic city center with all its magnificent buildings and sights such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Prater and the Danube Tower.
