The place at the foot of the Loser is especially known as a health resort and is located directly on Lake Altaussee. The settlement history of Altaussee goes back to around 200 to 400 AD, with salt mining also being a decisive factor. It was not until the 19th century that tourism became the town’s most important industry. Today, 1,818 people live here, including the actor Klaus Maria Brandauer and Hannes Androsch.
The oldest building in the community is the Altaussee parish church. It was first mentioned in the total land register of the Duchy of Styria, which was created under Albrecht I between 1280 and 1295. The church patron points to an origin in the 12th century.
The Altausseer Kirtag, whose beer tent is one of the most famous in Austria, is one of the largest tent festivals in the country with around 20,000 guests over three days. Around 600 barrels of beer are consumed on the three beer tent festival days. The tent festival takes place annually on the first weekend in September.
