General Information
On August 21, 1862, the park was ceremoniously opened and immediately enchanted visitors with its variety of lovely shrubs, colorful flower beds, and picturesque, winding paths. City Park delights with scenic meadows, extensive water areas, and artistic ornamental shrubs. Tall avenue trees provide a shield along the Ringstraße, which is hardly noticeable from within the park. The park covers an area of 95,000 m².
Within the park, several rare trees are protected, including a ginkgo, a Christ’s thorn, a pyramid poplar, and a Caucasian wingnut.
The shady meadows invite visitors to picnic and relax.
The Monuments
City Park possesses the largest collection of monuments and sculptures among all Viennese parks. The most famous monument in City Park is undoubtedly the Strauss Monument. Unveiled in 1921, it features a bronze statue of Johann Strauss, Jr., with a marble relief by Edmund Hellmer. Although the gilding was removed in 1935, it was restored in 1991.
Other monuments and sculptures in City Park include those of composers Franz Schubert, Franz Lehar, Robert Stolz, and Anton Bruckner, the painter Hans Makart, as well as the former Viennese mayor Andreas Zelinka, under whose administration the park was designed.
Additionally, the park houses three drinking fountains and six decorative fountains.
Leisure Activities
For play and sports, the City Park’s section in the 3rd district offers spacious playgrounds with water play opportunities, sand play areas, slides, swings, and see-saws. The playground is located on the opposite side of the Wien River.
Furthermore, there is a skate park for young visitors, as well as sports fields for football and basketball enthusiasts.
