The DomQuartier Tour
It’s best to take the tour. When we arrived at 10:00 am in the morning, we were the first ones because the guided tours start at 10 am. So, we had the completely empty corridors ahead of us. You don’t have to worry about getting lost because there is a clear tour route, and everything is well signposted. You should definitely get an audio guide as the rooms are beautifully described, sometimes even a bit too detailed for our taste. The journey through the DomQuartier begins in the magnificent baroque rooms of the Old Residence. On the upper floor of the former residence and official seat of the Prince-Archbishops, you will find the unique Residence Gallery, showcasing impressive paintings by European artists from the 16th to the 19th century.
Next, you reach the terrace, from where you have a beautiful view of the Cathedral Square, Salzburg Museum – New Residence, Residenzplatz & Fountain. If you like, you can have a coffee here and enjoy the view.
You then proceed to the rooms of the North Oratory in the Cathedral, which are adorned with intricate stucco work and mainly used for special exhibitions. Right after that, you reach the next highlight: you enter the organ room and thus get an incredible view of the interior of the Salzburg Cathedral.
In the South Oratory of the Cathedral, you will find the Cathedral Museum, housing artworks from the Gothic to the Baroque, not only from the Cathedral itself but also from other churches of the Archdiocese of Salzburg.
The visit to the DomQuartier continues through the Art and Curiosity Cabinet and the Long Gallery, ending at the St. Peter’s Museum, where the church treasury and artworks from the collections of the St. Peter’s Abbey, the oldest monastery in the German
-speaking world, are presented. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed here.
