General
The Alter Markt in Salzburg is a historic marketplace that dates back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, it evolved into an important trade and transportation hub. Between 1873 and 1927, the square was named Ludwig-Viktor-Platz, after the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It is located in the Old Town and is surrounded by historic buildings.
History
The Alter Markt in Salzburg is not only a historic marketplace but also a place with a long tradition. In the past, the Alter Markt and its surroundings were a bustling center for the trade of food and other goods. In addition to its function as a weekly market, the Alter Markt was also a venue for festivals and celebrations. It hosted the Pentecost dance, the sword dance of the Dürrnberg miners, the midsummer bonfire, and the barefoot dance of the bakers.
Until 1889, the Alter Markt was also the location of the annual Lenten market. Until 1856, the Autumn market, also known as Rupertimarkt, took place here. In 1857, the weekly market was relocated to the University Square.
The Market Today
Today, the market is an ensemble of stately townhouses, many of which have medieval roots.
A unique feature is the smallest old townhouse in Salzburg, which stands right next to Café Tomaselli, measuring only 1.42 meters in width. This tiny house was built in the 19th century by enclosing a small alley.
Since the 16th century, the Old Archbishop’s Court Pharmacy has also been located at Alter Markt. Opposite the Old Residence, you’ll find the traditional café Café Tomaselli and the Café-Konditorei Fürst, whose founder created the Mozartkugel.
The Florian Fountain
The Florian Fountain is an octagonal marble basin created between 1685 and 1687. It is adorned with acanthus-decorated corner pillars and rosettes. Atop the basin sits a delicate wrought-iron spiral grille created by Wolf Guppenberger in 1583. The fountain column bears the coat of arms of the city of Salzburg. At its pinnacle is a statue of Saint Florian of Lorch, created by Josef Anton Pfaffinger in 1734.
