The Ernst Fuchs Museum in Vienna is a true gem for art lovers. It houses an impressive collection of works by Austrian artist (draftsman, painter, sculptor, and architect) Ernst Fuchs, who is particularly known for his surrealist paintings.
The History
Otto Wagner had the Art Nouveau building, designed by himself, constructed from 1886 to 1888 as a summer residence on the edge of the Vienna Woods. Otto Wagner and his children lived in the villa until 1911, when they eventually sold it.
In 1972, the painter Ernst Fuchs purchased the property for 14 million Schillings at the time, had the villa renovated and adapted, and set up his studio here. It was personally designed and furnished by Ernst Fuchs, giving the museum a unique atmosphere.
The Museum Today
The exhibition rooms showcase countless works by Ernst Fuchs, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, stained glass art, and much more. The works are thematically arranged and provide insight into the artist’s different creative periods. Fuchs had Plácido Domingo, Oskar Werner, and Falco sit as models here.
One highlight of the museum is undoubtedly the “Apocalypse Cycle,” a series of 24 large-scale paintings that depict the Book of Revelation in an impressive way.
The fountain complex with its Byzantine-style fountain house and fountain in the park is also worth seeing. The Moses Fountain is adorned with colorful and glossy Tiffany glass mosaic. In addition to Ernst Fuchs’ works, there are also rotating exhibitions by other artists exploring themes such as surrealism, mysticism, and esotericism.
Anyone in Vienna with an interest in art should not miss a visit to the Ernst Fuchs Museum. It is a unique and fascinating experience that will not be easily forgotten.
