What is the Weidendom?
The Weidendom consists of domes woven from willow. Located at the junction to the mountaineering village of Johnsbach, this living structure has established its roots on the banks of the Enns River. Architect Marcel Kalberer, together with the employees of Gesäuse National Park, planned and designed the Weidendom during the winter of 2003/2004.
What can you experience there?
The Weidendom area offers a variety of attractions that appeal to both humans and animals. The Eco-Footprint Labyrinth encourages reflection on sustainable actions, while the Small Wildlife Garden represents an oasis for local wildlife. An idyllic alley of fruit trees also provides inspiration for environmentally conscious gardening at home.
Throughout the Weidendom grounds, guests will find quiet spots with cozy swings, inviting them to rest, picnic, and linger. Additionally, there is a grandstand with a spectacular view of the north faces of the Hochtor Group, which is used for interesting lectures and film screenings during the summer, creating a special atmosphere in the entire facility.
For those who want to refresh themselves in the cool waters of the Enns River, the visitor area at Johnsbachsteg provides an ideal spot. Here, you can enjoy the refreshing water while taking in a magnificent view of the majestic Gesäuse Mountains.
Themed Trails
The Weidendom Visitor Center is also the starting point for numerous themed trails that allow you to explore the surrounding area of the national park in a fascinating way. Examples include the “Lettmair AU” themed trail, the Leirerweg hiking trail, the “Der Wilde John” adventure trail, as well as the Johnsbachsteg & Badeteich (swimming pond).
