Location and surroundings of the Giglachseen
The lakes, consisting of the Upper and Lower Giglachsee, form an impressive natural backdrop in the Lower Tauern. As a central element of the western Schladminger Tauern, they attract hiking enthusiasts.
The lakes are located in the municipality of Schladming, nestled between the Schiedeck ridge in the north and the Tauern main ridge in the south. Surrounded by majestic peaks such as the Steirische and Lungauer Kalkspitze as well as the Kampspitze, the Giglachseen offer a breathtaking backdrop. The Lower Giglachsee stretches like a fjord for 1 km in a southwest-northeast direction at 1921 m above sea level, while the smaller Upper Giglachsee lies at 1930 m above sea level near the Preuneggsattel.
Two shelters, the Ignaz Mattis Hut and the privately run Giglachsee hut, invite hikers to rest and offer a magnificent view of the lake landscape.
