Hotel Hochschober in Portrait
Hotel Hochschober is a refuge that amazes. Wonderfully quiet, located at 1,763 meters above sea level in the Austrian state of Carinthia, directly on the shore of Lake Turrach. Surrounded by larch and stone pine forests, encircled by the gently rolling hills of the Nockberge. Nearby are picture-book alpine pastures, the picturesque Green and Black Lakes, mystical moors, and wild, romantic mountain valleys.
In winter, the Turrach Lake is covered with a solid ice surface. Trails for cross-country skiing and winter hiking cross the lake and through nature. On the snow-reliable slopes, skiers and snowboarders carve their turns.
Tradition and Innovation for Nearly 100 Years
In 1929, the Leeb family opened the “Gasthof Hochschober”. The special location on the Turrach Heights required special ideas. Developing exceptional ideas and then implementing them – the Leeb family has excelled at this for three generations. Notably, this involves intense deliberation on the subject, which always precedes innovation.
Today, the Leeb family and Klein continue the tradition of the house: as hosts with passion and attention to detail. Deeply rooted in the region and at the same time avid travelers themselves, always on the lookout for experience ideas for what people particularly seek in vacation: meaning and happiness.
Crazy Ideas and Quiet Wonders
A heated swimming pool in the cold lake? Saunas with panoramic views and direct access to the mountain lake? A Hamam and a China Tower in the middle of the Alps?
Hotel Hochschober consistently surprises its guests with ideas that sound almost crazy at first. Yet, they are thought through to the smallest detail: the quintessence of their own enthusiasm, numerous study trips, and the pursuit of authenticity. For example, a Chinese architect planned the China Tower, and all furnishings come from China. The Hochschober employees learned the art of the tea ceremony from Chinese tea masters.
Quiet wonders make it easy to dive into vacation from the first moment: the gentle yet powerful washing in the Hamam relieves everyday tensions, the tea ceremony in the China Tower decelerates and sharpens the senses, swimming in the always warm lake bath or – for fans of cold and winter bathing in the cool Turrach Lake – awakens the spirits, a visit to the saunas with panoramic views warms and refreshes at the same time. Guests splash under the starry sky in the rock bath. It’s Crystal Spa offers soothing treatments for body, skin, and beauty. The range includes around 70 different massages and treatments, including specialities such as Hamam washings, Chinese massages, and Ayurvedic treatments.
The Forest Villa is the meeting point for those who love to move. Hochschober’s glass-enclosed wooden building with the best view of nature houses the fitness center with Technogym equipment and a hall for exercise sessions and events.
Inspiration for the mind is promised by the “Word Reich“, the well-stocked library with reading salon. A place for playful togetherness is the game room with custom-made tables for classic board games.
Alpine Comfort: Insights into the Design of Rooms and Suites
Comfortably alpine-designed rooms and suites make the mountain nature tangible. Fine materials and charming details – from the noiseless stone pine ventilator to the hand-embroidered silk carpet – ensure a cozy living feeling. The rooms and suites, as well as the Word Reich and the fireplace hall, bear the sensitive signature of Christian Satek and Mag. Sabine Kreuzspiegl (Mirror Interior, Vienna).
Inter-generational Enthusiasm: The Hochschober as a Family Hotel
Like few other hotels in Austria, the Hochschober excites people of all generations. Children are taken care of daily in the “Children’s Villa“. In the villa’s garden, there is a tree village with three themed cottages, platforms, a slide, and climbing nets. In the Children’s Villa, teenagers also meet in the youth club. This way, all guests can enjoy HochschoberN in their own way.
Culinary Diversity: From Alpine-Adriatic Cuisine to Vegan Delights
Speaking of enjoyment: In addition to the proven, regionally influenced line, the kitchen has been cooking vegan, i.e., free of animal protein and gluten-free, for over 10 years. Starting in the summer of 2024, “Interval Enjoyment” will expand the culinary selection for those who eat in a 16:8 rhythm. This allows for a new offer of an early dinner.
Region, Ecology, and Social Responsibility
Since its founding, Hotel Hochschober has focused on sustainable and responsible business practices. At the heart of the activities is the “Golden Relationship Hexagon” of guests – employees – entrepreneurial family – suppliers – banks – society. To illustrate these measures, the hotel, which had already produced sustainability reports and a common good balance sheet, underwent a Sustainable Development Index (SDI) rating for the first time in 2023.
