In the middle of the Hohe Tauern lies one of the most impressive buildings of the post-war period. Kaprun high mountain reservoirs with its two reservoirs, Waterfall floor and Mooserboden, at about 2,040 metres above sea level.
From Kaprun, it's about a 12-minute drive to the end of the street. There you'll find a free parking garage with ten floors. There's no other way to get to the reservoir. A little tip: just park at the top, because the exit and the ticket office are at the top.
The entrance fee to the reservoir is 25 €, including the bus ride (up and down). You hardly have any other choice, as the hike to the reservoir takes 4 hours. Make sure you have a Kaprun Summer Card which is often free with overnight stays. This also includes free entry to the reservoir.
The bus takes about 15 minutes to get to the top. final destination is directly at the dam from the upper Mooserboden reservoirThere are numerous paths from here, for example you can walk along the dam wall. You should definitely climb the hill between the two dam walls, as you have an excellent view of both reservoirs from up here.
There is also the option of taking guided tours of the dam. However, after four days of constant rain in Bühlertal, we wanted to enjoy the nice weather and decided to forego this tour.
Hike from the upper to the lower reservoir:
Instead, we decided to go from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir, the Wasserfallboden reservoir to hike. The path leads away from the herbal trail. We started our hike at 1:30 p.m. The path is manageable for everyone, it leads steadily downhill along the narrow path.
Less than 40 minutes later we arrived at our destination, the Ebmattenhütte-FürthermoaralmIf you have time, you should definitely stop here: the surroundings and landscape are simply gorgeous, the hut is idyllically situated and offers everything you need for a pleasant rest.
The apple strudel and the homemade buttermilk are excellent and highly recommended. The Kaiserschmarrn also looks delicious, but unfortunately we only saw it at our table neighbors.
You can fill your water bottle with fresh mountain water from the fountain. There is a beautifully situated children's playground for children. The buses also leave right outside the door. Unfortunately, we feel that the timetable is poorly organized. We are lucky and get a bus straight away, but we heard from others that they have been waiting for an hour. The journey down also takes a lot longer because the road is one lane and we kept having to wait because of oncoming traffic. It took us almost 45 minutes to get down.
Nevertheless, the reservoirs in Kaprun are highly recommended. You can have a wonderful time here, especially when the weather is nice.
