Krems on the Danube is located on the Danube 70 kilometres west of Vienna.
The Old town of Krems is a UNESCO World Heritage Site Cultural landscape Wachauwhich was recognised in 2000.
The landmark of the town of Krems is the Steiner gatea preserved town gate, which was extensively restored in 2005.
Both the district of Krems and the district of Stein have closed historic city centres. As the main focus of trade and commerce has retreated to the Krems district and the shopping centres on the eastern edge of the city over the last 50 years, the Stein district has remained largely unchanged in terms of its buildings. However, most of the small commercial uses and small retail businesses have disappeared.
Over the past few years, numerous initiatives have been undertaken to revitalise the Stein district and the former monastery located between Krems and Stein. And to revitalise the city. Particularly noteworthy are the Kunsthalle Krems (with changing exhibitions, focussing on contemporary art) and the Caricature Museum Krems (permanent exhibition of the artists Manfred Deix and the architect and caricaturist Gustav Peichl (Ironimus) as well as special shows), a literature house and local initiatives.
