The Gänsehäufel is one of the oldest and probably the most famous outdoor pools in Vienna. It has already been sung about in songs like “Strada del Sole” by Reinhard Fendrich. In any case, there is enough space and leisure time opportunities on the approximately 20-hectare island in the Old Danube. On around 333,000m² (of which 60,000m² is water), 33,000 people can gather here every day, with 3,574 cabins, 10,368 boxes and 260 showers available. Despite these massive numbers, you never feel cramped.
The name “Gänsehäufl” refers to the former “Haufen” (washed-up islands), which are said to have served primarily to breed geese. The bath was first opened in 1907 as the “Commune Wien am Gänsehäufel”. It was completely renovated in the early 2000s and is now a listed building.
