The Lobau is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful local recreation areas in Vienna. It is one of 6 national parks in Austria and is one of the last intact floodplain areas in Europe. It covers 2,300 hectares and accounts for almost a quarter of the total area of the Donau-Auen National Park.
A trip is particularly worthwhile for bird watchers and animal lovers: more than 800 plants, 30 species of mammals and 100 species of breeding birds, 8 species of reptiles, 13 species of amphibians and 60 species of fish are at home here. Among them you will find beavers, water shrews, marsh shrews, brown rats, white-tailed eagles and kingfishers, brown hares, roe deer, deer and wild boar
A well-signposted network of hiking and cycling trails runs through the entire Lobau and is suitable for the whole family. Even with a pram you can walk very well here. Maps and information are available from the information booth at the parking lot at Dechantweg 10.
The following circular routes can be discovered (of course you can also deviate from them):
- Obere Lobau nature trail (5 km, 2-3 hours, the path leads over hot areas and along quiet oxbow lakes)
- Forsthaus-Rundweg (6 km, 2 hours, circular hike over mostly open areas of the Upper Lobau)
- Panozzalacke circular route (5 km, 1 hour, several avenues and meadows of the Lobau are crossed here)
- Napoleon circular route (10 km, 3 hours, some memorial stones for the battle against Napoleon are on the route)
- Untere Lobau – circular route (8 km, 2-3 hours, hike of several hours to the idyllic Untere Lobau)
By the way, there are also 4 bathing places in the Lobau. It has to be said that these bathers are famous for their nudist bathers 😉
