The Lünersee is one of the largest lakes in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg in the municipality of Vandans. At full water level, it lies at an altitude of 1970 metres above sea level at the foot of the Schesaplana. After the state of Vorarlberg began sealing the lake bed in 1920, Vorarlberger Illwerke AG increased the storage volume of the lake with a dam in 1959. The water depth is 139 metres when fully dammed.
The area around the lake forms the end of the Brandnertal valley, which can only be reached via a narrow path or the Lünersee railway from the area Shadow lanthanum can be reached from here. The Douglasshütte is located directly at the mountain station on the dam wall and serves as a snack bar and overnight accommodation for hikers. It was completed in 1960 as a replacement for a previous building dating back to 1870, whose site on the peninsula at 1969 metres above sea level was flooded during the first full dam.
Lünersee circular hike
The circular walk around Lake Lünersee is the ideal hike for families. With a duration of one and a half to two hours, the easy circular route is suitable for children of almost any age.
The six-kilometre trail leads along the picturesque shores of Lake Lünen and offers breathtaking views. The steepest ascent and descent of the circular hiking trail is to the left of the dam wall. Once this section has been completed, the rest of the circular walk is almost at ground level.
Due to the ascent on the left-hand side, the circular route is not suitable for pushchairs. Alternatively, you can start your hike from the right-hand side and then turn back at the Lünersee Alpe.
