Mayrhofen is the unofficial capital of the Zillertal. There is everything that the holidaymaker needs: bars, pubs, restaurants, 2 Spar supermarkets, Billa, souvenir shops, liquor stores, wine boutiques, butchers, cheese shops, sports shops, children’s toys, BIPA, DM, gas station, etc. The whole thing is also sweet and worth seeing. The main street just invites you to stroll.
The city is known for its ski areas. Ski lifts provide access to the slopes on the Ahorn in the south. In the west, the Penken has the steep slope “Harakiri” with an unbelievable 78 (!) percent gradient. It is also the steepest ski slope in Austria! The cable car leads directly from the main road up the mountain. Hiking trails lead to Gasthof Zimmereben with a view of the valley and the Ahorn. Alpine birds of prey can be observed on the Ahorn Adlerbühne.
Penken cable car
It leads away from the main street in Mayrhofen (Ahornstraße 853, 6290 Mayrhofen). The ascent and descent costs 22.5 €. The gondolas are huge and the ride up is a real experience. By the way, on Penken you can not only hike (even with a pram), but also paraglide, climb, mountaineering, mountain biking and, in winter, even tobogganing down.
In any case, the view of the Zillertal is overwhelming.
Ahornbahn (Ahorn cable car)
It was only put into operation in December 2006 and, with its 160-passenger cabins, is the largest aerial tramway in Austria. The Ahorn impresses with its wide carving slopes and is known for its winter hiking trails.
You can also experience fascinating moments in the highest bird of prey station in Europe at 2,000 m. From July to September there is an eagle show with eagles, owls, buzzards and falcons.
