The Mondsee, located in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut southwest of the Attersee, belongs with its entire area to the municipality of the same name. The south bank forms the border between Upper Austria and the State of Salzburg.
The little brother of the Mondsee is the Irrsee: the two lakes are, by the way, the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut. Pretty much any kind of sport can be practiced at these lakes, whether swimming, golfing, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, tennis, fishing, diving and more.
The Mondee is particularly popular with sailors. Hundreds of boats of all sizes cavort here in summer. Since the winds can turn very quickly here, you should seek advice in advance.
Hikers and climbers also get their money’s worth in this area, with the Drachenwand being particularly popular.
