The rear Gosausee
To get to the rear Gosausee, you first have to pass the front Gosausee. The rear Gosausee is located at 1154 m above sea level. A forest road leads to the lake, which is closed to public traffic. The lake in the Salzkammergut is located around 8 km south of the town center of Gosau at the end of the Gosau valley.
The almost circular lake has a maximum length of 800 m and a maximum width of 600 m. Its surface area is about 31 hectares. Its rock basin is a tongue basin carved out by the glacier. On the southwest side, massive scree cones extend from the Gosau ridge down to the lake. The lake is fed by underground inflows, which are influenced by the Great Gosau Glacier and the Hallstatt Glacier, among others.
At the southern end of the lake are the summer farms Hohe Holzmeisteralm (1164 m above sea level) and a hunting lodge. Since the Hinterer Gosausee occasionally reaches temperatures of just over 20 °C in summer, it is also occasionally used for bathing purposes.
