General
The award-winning Salzburg Museum is housed in the magnificently restored New Residence. Both permanent exhibitions and changing special exhibitions are presented on a total exhibition area of 3,000 m2. We must mention at this point that this museum is only for real art lovers. While tourists are enjoying the Residence Square , we are almost alone in the museum.
The Salzburg Museum has a wide range of exhibitions and collections presented on different floors:
1st floor: Unique presentation of Salzburg
This exhibition is dedicated to the uniqueness of Salzburg and presents objects from various collection areas. Visitors can travel through modernly designed and colorful exhibition rooms to discover the history of the city from ancient times to the present day. The exhibition explains how Salzburg became the place it is today and highlights the unique aspects of the city.
2nd floor: The myth of Salzburg
This floor delves deep into the myth of Salzburg. It shows how romantic painters, writers and scientists spread the beauty and charm of the Salzburg region throughout Europe. The exhibition highlights the rise of Salzburg to a baroque city and the development of urban structures after the end of the archbishopric in 1800. Visitors learn how tourism began and how this gave rise to the "myth" of Salzburg.
Apparently this is the most beautiful terrace café in Salzburg, but unfortunately it is closed because it rained earlier and the ground is too slippery. What a pity.
Underground Panorama Passage
The Panorama Passage connects the Salzburg Museum with the Panorama Museum underground. Here, visitors can see archaeological excavations from the New Residence, admire city models and view handicraft objects. The passage also offers historical data on the development of Salzburg from Roman times to the present day.
Art Gallery
The Salzburg Museum's art gallery is located under the inner courtyard of the New Residence. This area is multifunctional and has a continuous light ceiling. Three important special exhibitions are presented here every year in extraordinary spaces, focusing on different works of art and themes.
