Experience the Salzkammergut from above: The Schafbergbahn to the mountain station
The Schafberg (1,782 m) is a striking and probably the most famous mountain in the Salzkammergut mountains in the border region of the federal states of Salzburg and Upper Austria. Its summit is accessible to tourists via the Schafbergbahn and lies entirely in Salzburg.
The Schafberg railway, a cog railway, runs from St. Wolfgang (Schafberg station) over the Schafbergalpe (stop at 1,363 m) to the mountain station at 1,732 m. The railway line is 5.85 km long, the difference in altitude is 1,188 m and the journey takes about 35 minutes. The Schafbergbahn only operates from the beginning of May to the end of September and is a real experience for locals and tourists alike.
From the Schafberg summit you have a unique view of the numerous lakes in the Salzkammergut. The Wolfgangsee, Attersee, Fuschlsee, Mondsee and Irrsee are particularly clearly visible.
