It is not for nothing that the Walmendingerhorn is known and loved as the mountain of the senses. The train takes you comfortably to the mountain station at almost 2,000 meters above sea level. Even from the gondola you have a wonderful view of the Kleinwalsertal. The mountain offers incredible views for hikers, and in winter there are 15 kilometers of slopes available for beginners and advanced skiers.
Our experience: After a short drive, we arrive at the parking lot at 9:00 a.m. The day ticket for parking costs €5. The cable car runs every 15 minutes. With our “Allgäu Walser Card” all rides with gondolas or buses are included this weekend. An excellent deal considering that a return trip here costs €29. The two gondolas go up and down alternately.
At 9:00 a.m. we board the train and set off before the timetable. The journey to the top takes only 6 minutes.
At the mountain station you will find a souvenir shop, toilets and a restaurant.
Directly at the mountain station there is the panoramic lift to the Geo viewing platform on the Walmendingerhorn. The barrier-free geo-viewing platform offers a view of a breathtaking panorama – when the weather is nice, of the 3-country corner Germany / Austria / Switzerland.
In our opinion, the platform would not have been needed at all, since you also have a perfect view.
Summer tip for nature lovers: From the mountain station it only takes a few minutes to the summit cross. On the way there is the alpine flower educational trail. Hikers will come across more than 130 plant and flower families. Short, descriptive texts impart new knowledge about the alpine flora.
When you reach the summit cross, you have another breathtaking panorama with a view of the Schwarzwassertal nature reserve and the majestic Ifen plateau, which you can admire here, unusually, from the back. From here we also discover the beautiful Herzsee, which we will look for later and describe in more detail here.
Unfortunately, the cross itself is one of the ugliest in history, it is made of iron and some vandals shot into it with guns…it doesn’t even exist. However, the view on the way up and from the summit cross is unique!
We go back down to the mountain station. From there, countless hiking trails lead in all directions, making it difficult to make a decision. The path down into the valley, which takes around 1 hour, is very popular. Since we want to test other mountain railways for you today (e.g. the Ifenbahn), we take the gondola down again.
