At 1,850 m above sea level, there is one of the five reservoirs in the Zillertal, the Zillergründl reservoir or the Zillergrund reservoir, built in the 1980s.
A toll road (€ 8) leads from Mayrhofen to the reservoir. However, you cannot go directly up to the reservoir. The last parking lot is at the hamlet of Bärenbad. At this point at the latest you have to change to a bus. This will bring you to the dam on the lake.
Tip: If you live in Mayrhofen, you can even take the bus from Mayrhofen!
Several hikes start from the Zillergründl reservoir. One of them is the wonderful hike along the lake to the Plauener Hütte at 2,364 m above sea level.
On the hike along the lake you also cross the fascinating Little Tibet. After a trip to Tibet, Franz Hanser found that the landscape in the Zillergrund was very similar to that in Tibet. He then leased the Hohenau Alm and hung Tibetan flags everywhere. This was followed by panels with mottos and finally in 2004 it began to operate.
You will soon find a detailed and personal report on the Zillergründl storage facility here.
