Ort Castle, picturesquely situated on a small island in Traunsee Located in the Salzkammergut region, it is one of the most famous landmarks in the Salzkammergut region. Its striking white façade, historic tower, and unique location in the middle of the water make the castle a popular tourist destination. Its origins date back to the 11th century, and even today it attracts many visitors – whether for sightseeing, cultural events, or as a romantic wedding location.
The first documented mention dates back to 909, although the current complex probably dates back to the 11th century. Originally, Ort Castle served as a fortified residence and, over the centuries, was owned by various noble families, including the Habsburgs. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex was rebuilt several times and largely acquired its present appearance. Since 1995, the castle has been owned by the city. Gmunden.
The castle became known far beyond the country's borders through the TV series "Schlosshotel Orth" (1996–2004). Today, it is a symbol of the region and is intensively used for tourism and cultural purposes.
Ort Castle can be visited as part of a public tour or individually (depending on the season). The castle courtyard with its view of the Traunstein as well as the long wooden bridge that connects the castle to the shore.
The exhibition "Myth of Traunstein" is located on the first floor of Schloss Ort. It is dedicated to the striking mountain that dominates the townscape of Gmunden and explores its geological origins, its role in mountaineering, and the history of mountain rescue. Historical equipment, maps, images, and personal accounts are on display. A central part of the exhibition deals with the dangers of the Traunstein – Since 1879, more than 140 people have died there. The exhibition offers a thorough insight into the fascination and challenge of this mountain.
Culture and events
The castle hosts numerous events, from concerts and readings to ceremonies and receptions. It's particularly popular as a wedding venue: The castle registry office offers an exceptional setting with a lake view. The castle courtyard is often transformed into an atmospheric open-air stage during the summer months.
Surroundings and leisure
Directly in front of the castle runs the esplanade of Gmunden, which invites you to take a stroll with a view of the lake. Numerous cafés and seating areas create ideal conditions for a relaxing break. The adjacent Toscanapark offers additional green recreational areas. Traunsee itself is a popular spot for sailors, SUP riders and other water sports enthusiasts.
Gastronomy tip directly at the castle
Directly at the Lehenaufsatz, just before Schloss Ort, is the FishmasterThis small stall offers grilled fish (e.g., trout or mackerel) fresh from the grill from April to October, weather permitting. Opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday to Sunday, and on public holidays from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. It's ideal for a snack overlooking the water.
