The keeping of wild animals has a long tradition in Herberstein and can be traced back to the 17th century, when fallow deer were first kept in Austria. Towards the end of the 1960s, Herberstein was transformed into an animal park, where visitors can get an impression of animals from all five continents. The enclosures are extremely spacious. At first we even have the feeling that it is too big, as we only ever see the animals from a distance, but this is soon to change.
From the Brown bear are the first breathtaking impressions we get. The bear enclosure is extensive, and there is even a stream with a waterfall running through the centre. It's almost like being in the middle of nature. We stay here for a good 20 minutes, and at the end the bear even goes for a swim in the pond.
We continue the tour and pass bison, camels, peacocks, pelicans, alpacas, a puma and many more. Each animal has plenty of space with ample opportunities to retreat. Prairie dogs can be seen again and again throughout the park. Finally you come to the Monkeys and lionsbut the latter are currently asleep.
One highlight is the Cheetah enclosureby the way, the largest in Europe. A so-called prey simulator (roughly comparable to a drag lift) for feeding the cheetahs was also installed here for the first time in the world in 1978. The animals seem to feel right at home here, rolling around in the sun, which is finally making an appearance.
Close to the entrance there is a Petting zoo for children.
For us, this zoo is one of the most beautiful we have ever visited. You should definitely plan to spend at least 4 hours there if you want to discover everything.
By the way: if you stay in the area for more than 3 nights, you will receive a "GenussCard". With this you get a 20% discount on your visit.
