In the 13th century Tulln still surrounded by a city fortification. Not much of the wall is left, as it was largely demolished in 1860. But even today there is still a beautifully preserved section with a City Tower and a ditch in front of it.
The town tower, built in 1550, is a round tower, it protected the south-west corner of the city wall. The city wall of that time was up to 5m high and 1.8m wide. In front of this wall was the "Zwinger", a narrow corridor and in front of this was the Zwinger wall, just under 1 meter wide and only 2 meters high; in front of that was the city moat and city rampart.
Originally Tulln surrounded by a rectangular wall 600 meters long and 420 meters wide. There were towers or bastion-like fortifications at the corners, and in the middle of the wall sides there were four gates facing the four cardinal points.
Further information on the history of Tulln can be found in the Roman Museum.
