Discover the Kitzsteinhorn & the Gipfelwelt 3000: an adventure!
We parked at the car park of the Maiskogelbahn (Kitzsteinhornplatz 1a, 5710 Kaprun). There are two different cable cars leading up to the Kitzsteinhorn, but this is said to be the nicer one. The ride is with the Kaprun Map once again for free, hard to believe. Savings of a whopping €46 per person, mind you!
We board the first gondola at 10.30 am. The view is marvellous.
After 10 minutes you can get off at the first station, but you don't have to. We continue on, of course. We glided over the alpine pastures and had a marvellous view of Zell am See and the mountains behind. From the top, we can see the cows grazing on the alpine pastures.
At 10:48 we arrive at the first station on the mountain, where we actually have to change - we continue straight away on the 2nd gondola towards the Kitzsteinhorn. The two gondolas from Kaprun meet at the second mountain station. To our astonishment, there is even an Intersport at this mountain station.
If you like, you can take a break here in the restaurant. However, we immediately board the next gondola, the Gletscherjet 2.
Now you come to the 3rd mountain station, where you will find the Gletschermühle restaurant, from where you can enjoy a marvellous view.
At 11:36 (a good hour or 4 gondola rides later) we arrive at the mountain station at around 3,000 metres.
But wait, we're not quite at the top yet. Now we go left through a tunnel to an inclined lift. This takes us a little further up to the first Panoramic terrace at 3,029 m : Top Of Salzburg it is rightly called.
Incidentally, the summit is at 3203 metres.
Experience the best of Kaprun: cable car, Kitzsteinhorn & more!
From here you have a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. If you like, there is a restaurant in the same building. We walk back down from the lowest floor through a tunnel. This saves you having to take the inclined lift.
Now you walk right through a tunnel cut into the mountain. There are always informative signs about the Kitzsteinhorn. Gold and silver used to be mined here. At the end of the tunnel you reach the second viewing terrace, the "National Park Gallery".
The glaciated peaks of the Hohe Tauern National Park gleamed in the sun and Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, seemed within reach.
On the way down, we stop once again at station three to take a look at the Glacier mill for lunch. We ordered a sour Radler and a wheat beer. The dish of the day was a Szeged goulash, which tasted excellent. Unfortunately, the Kaiserschmarrn is only mediocre and is served without sultanas.
