The Kufstein Fortress is the landmark of the city of Kufstein and is one of the most impressive medieval buildings in Tyrol.
It is located on the fortress mountain above the town of Kufstein on a 90 m high rock directly on the Inn and can be reached on foot or with the Kaiser Maximilian panorama cable car.
The fortress was first mentioned in documents in 1205 as "Castrum Caofstein". Kufstein Fortress is a popular tourist destination in the Tyrolean lowlands. The fortress lift and the panoramic cable car were built in the 20th century. Since 2005, there has been a mobile roof for Josefsburg Castle so that this area can be used for concerts and events.
The organ pipes of the world's largest open-air organ, the Heroes' Organ, are located in the Citizens' Tower, while the console is located at the foot of the fortress. The organ concert, which lasts around ten minutes, takes place daily at 12 noon (also at 6 p.m. in July and August) in memory of those who fell in both world wars, and can be heard throughout the city.
There is a long rock passage (publicly accessible casemate) and the “Deep Well”, a castle well about 60 m deep.
The Josefsburg is often used for concerts and events, and there is a fortress restaurant with special knight's meals. Every year at Pentecost, a large knight's festival takes place, with concerts, knight fights and a reenactment of Hans von Pienzenau's last battle.
