The Altausseer See (also Altausseersee) is a mountain lake in the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut, at the south-western foot of the Totes Gebirge and lies at 712 m above sea level. The centre of the municipality is located on the western shore Altaussee. With its largely unspoilt shores and adjacent wetlands, the lake provides habitats for many animal and plant species and has been a nature reserve since 1959. Lake Altaussee, which is owned by the Austrian Federal Forests, is a popular excursion destination due to its beautiful location.
The water is crystal clear and transparent and has a slightly dark blue colour. This is why Lake Altaussee is also known as the "dark blue inkwell".

The trail is approx. 7km long, pushchair-friendly and very easy to manage. It is also probably one of the most beautiful lakeside trails in Austria, as you walk right next to the shore the whole time. You have a wonderful view of the Loser.
To the south of the Seewiese is the "Jagdhaus Seewiese"a pub dating back to the 1900s, where you can also enjoy a wonderful meal of fish.
