Brief information:
- What is the Schlögener Loop? A river loop in Upper Austria
- Where is it located? About halfway between Linz and Passau
- Is there an entrance fee? No, but there is a fee for parking in Schlögen.
- Can you drive there directly? No, it takes about 30 minutes to walk
The river's impressive 180-degree turn is located in the upper Danube valley, which is often described as the most beautiful and pristine section of the Danube.
There are views of the course of the Danube at the Schlögener Loop from the Haichenbach castle ruins, from the “Steiner Felsen”, from the “Linetshuber Aussicht” and from the “Schlögener View”.
Hike to the Schlögener Blick
We park our car right below the loop, at the Donausteig starting point "Schlögen". This is on the driveway to the "Hotel Donauschlinge". Guests park for free, everyone else has to put €5 per car into a machine. This is the minimum fee and is valid for 24 hours, even if you only stay for 1 hour.
The Viewpoint “Schlögener Blick”, the natural wonder of Upper Austria, is located directly on the Donausteig and can be reached in 30 minutes from Schlögen.
You walk past the hotel towards the hiking trail. It is impossible to miss; hiking signs indicate 1.4km. Now you walk uphill for about 30 minutes along a forest path. The path is quite beautiful, but overall unspectacular.
At the end, however, you are rewarded with an impressive view. Unfortunately, during our visit in autumn, the sun barely made it over the mountain, so most of it was in the shade.
TIP: You can also take a wonderful walk down along the river bank!
