Brief information:
- Where is the place? On the western side of the Wolfgangsee
- What is there to see here? The Mozart House (Mother’s home)
- Other highlights? The local mountain, the Zwölferhorn. In summer it is the starting point for many hikes, in winter there are several ski slopes.
- Do ships dock in St. Wolfgang? Yes, here you can find the Timetables.
St. Gilgen is located in the Salzburg part of the Salzkammergut. The town is one of the three surrounding communities of Lake Wolfgang (along with Strobl and St Wolfgang).
“Mozart Village” is the name of this holiday resort, although the child prodigy from Salzburg was never here. Only his mother and sisters lived here. Nevertheless, there has been an exhibition here since 2008 that shows letters and other personal items.
One of the town's attractions is the short lake promenade where several ships are moored. The most loyal summer guests are immortalized here with monuments, such as Nobel Prize winner Karl von Frisch and former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
The most striking feature of the village is the beautiful parish church of St. Aegydius, just above the MozartplatzAfter all, Mozart's mother was baptized here and his grandparents and sister were married here.
On the outskirts of the village, the cable car takes you to the Twelve Horn, a beautiful mountain with a wonderful view. Several worthwhile hikes start here.
