The Vienna Secession – A Milestone in Art History
The most famous work of the Secession is undoubtedly the exhibition building at the Vienna Naschmarkt, which is still preserved in its original splendor today. The shining golden dome can be seen from afar. The facade of the building is adorned with a golden laurel wreath and the inscription “To every age its art, to art its freedom.” This inscription stands for the maxim of the Vienna Secession to break away from conventional art forms and to forge new paths.
Founded in 1897, the Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession is the world’s oldest independent exhibition hall dedicated to contemporary art. The focus was on promoting contemporary art, independent of traditional conventions and prevailing opinion.
The famous artist Gustav Klimt was one of the founding members and decisively influenced the aesthetics of the Vienna Secession. His paintings are now world-famous and belong to the most important works of Art Nouveau. The art of the Secession was characterized by flowing forms, ornately decorated surfaces, and a tendency towards abstraction.
The Vienna Secession was a milestone in art history and influenced many generations of artists after it. Even today, their works can be admired in numerous museums and exhibitions, inspiring artists all over the world.
Today, the Secession regularly presents exhibitions by national and international artists. A detailed list of current exhibitions and events can be found on the official Secession website.
