On November 10, 2023, the Christkindl and Christmas markets in Vienna came to life. Throughout the EU, there is no city with a greater variety of Christmas markets. This year, you can look forward to a total of 14 markets with impressive 777 stalls, including 179 gastronomic stands waiting to be explored.
Here, we show you our favorite markets, although the selection is, of course, a matter of personal taste. At the end, you will also find an overview of all the markets.
Christmas Market at Am Hof
The Christmas Market at Am Hof transports you to a time when Vienna’s history comes alive. Under the festive decorations and against the backdrop of historical buildings, the 70+ exhibitors showcase craftsmanship, artistic creations, carefully selected gift ideas, local delicacies, and the unmistakable aroma of mulled wine.
At Am Hof, you can expect a diverse range of offerings: from incense and honey products, sausages and pretzels, Christmas decorations to handwoven woolen clothing and wooden toys, there’s something for everyone’s taste.
Cultural and Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace
Making a trip to Schönbrunn is impressive at any time of the year, but especially during the Advent season, the place unfolds its very special magic. The Ehrenhof in front of the majestic Schönbrunn Palace shines festively decorated during the Cultural and Christmas Market.
High-quality craftsmanship, culinary delights, and festive lighting create a unique atmosphere.
The melodies of Christmas music, accompanied by the enticing scent of roasted almonds, mulled wine, and punch, give this place a distinctive Christmas atmosphere – although it can get quite crowded in the evening hours.
Over 80 carefully decorated huts provide the opportunity to enjoy and discover special gifts. The world of Christmas baubles, angels, and snowmen comes to life at the Cultural and Christmas Market, as well as the New Year’s Market at Schönbrunn Palace. In the festively adorned huts, exhibitors from Austria and neighboring countries showcase high-quality craftsmanship, unique Christmas decorations, nostalgic toys, and regional delicacies. The diversity, quality, and attention to detail are reflected in every stall.
Tip: After December 27, the market transforms into a New Year’s market. Good luck charms, diaries, and hand-blown champagne glasses expand the range of the huts, already anticipating the approaching New Year. Musical accompaniment by Dixie, Swing, and Jazz ensembles promises a musical transition into the new year.
Art Advent in front of St. Charles’s Church
The Art Advent in front of the majestic St. Charles’s Church captivates with an artistic touch. Here, you’ll discover handmade artworks accompanied by a diverse cultural program. The baroque backdrop of St. Charles’s Church gives this market a special aura – a place where art and Christmas harmoniously blend.
We particularly recommend this market for children: Here, they can find the Draisinen Express, a mobile track system complete with switches and platforms. In addition, there are various creatively assembled rolling vehicles made from found objects, a straw landscape, and a small petting zoo.
Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien Square
The Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien Square captivates with its central location between the Art History Museum and the Natural History Museum. The elegant stalls offer a curated selection of gifts and delicacies. In this exquisite setting, you’ll experience festive elegance and urban enchantment alike.
Christmas Market at Rathausplatz
Opinions may differ on whether this Christmas market is among the most beautiful. We think it is! However, it’s advisable to avoid the evening hours on weekends as that’s when the tourist crowds gather.
The Christmas Market at Rathausplatz is a highlight of the Vienna Christmas season. The magnificent lighting, impressive Christmas tree, and the variety of stalls with traditional treats create an atmosphere full of splendor and festive magic. Over the years, the Vienna Christkindlmarkt has evolved, offering not only traditional craftsmanship, jewelry stands, and punch stalls but also a diverse program of events. The market extends not only across Rathausplatz but also into the surrounding Rathauspark, where the famous Herzerlbaum (Heart Tree) and other charming attractions await. The Advent wreath of the Protestant Diakonie with its special tradition and the Eistraum at the Christkindlmarkt add further highlights to this festive setting.

The Vienna Christkindlmarkt places great emphasis on making the wait for the big celebration especially exciting for children and families. A huge carousel, a fun reindeer train, a Ferris wheel, and much more make the eyes of the little ones light up. A nativity trail, the “Bussiplatz,” and a lively Advent calendar are further highlights that make children’s hearts beat faster.
