Carinthia: Moor hike Keutschach

The Keutschacher Moor is located in the centre of the Keutschacher Seental, south of Lake Wörthersee (near Reifnitz). The area covers approx. 50 ha. The 7km circular trail is surrounded by extensive fens with reed beds, alder swamp forest and wet grassland. The Keutschach moor hike is a perfect family hike.

Tour dates:

  • Start: Centre of Keutschach
  • Refreshment stops: only one Spar is on the way
  • DurationApprox. 2.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Lightweight, also suitable for pushchairs
  • Total path length: 7,66km
  • Altitude metres: 105 up and down
  • Season: at any time

The hike:

We start our hike in Keutschach and park directly opposite the beautiful church in the centre (we walk the circular route in an anti-clockwise direction).

We walk down the main road and pass the castle pond. The path continues slightly downhill until we spot Lake Keutschach in the distance after about 20 minutes. Now we walk along the main road towards the lake. We stop off at the Spar supermarket to get some last snacks for the hike.

We go round the Spar and turn left along the path by the stream Direction lido (The lake and campsite are now on our right).

We walk along the tarmac path, which is suitable for pushchairs, before turning left at a wooden bridge and walking along a small stream. We are now surrounded by moorland. Information boards provide interesting facts about the habitats of the meadows, forests, lake and more.

We pass a small lake on the left and turn right deeper into the moor.

After about a third of the route, you reach a viewpoint. We take a short detour there and walk up the platform to enjoy the scenery.

However, the circular route leads past it on the right. It is always well signposted.

After a short stretch on the tarmac path, we turn left into the forest. Although the forest path is narrow, it is still quite easy to manage with a pushchair, although you will need a fairly all-terrain pushchair. Unfortunately, this section of the path is unsuitable for wheelchair users, as it is always slightly uphill and downhill over roots.

After 20 minutes, we reach a tarmac path again, where we turn right. If you want to shorten the hike, you can also turn left here. However, we do not recommend this as the most beautiful part of the hike lies ahead of us.

We continue the circular hike and walk a short distance uphill to a beautiful flower meadow. From here you can see both our starting point at the church and, in the background on the left, the Pyramidenkogel. Shortly afterwards, the path is tarmac again.

We continue along a gravel path through the beautiful, unspoilt forest. After a few minutes we reach the Lake Baßgeigenone of the most beautiful parts of the hike for us.

We walk around the lake again in an anti-clockwise direction. At the back, it is now a little uphill, but you have a wonderful view of the lake. Lake Baßgeigen. Shortly afterwards, you return to Keutschach.
