Tour information: On the trail of the Giglachseen

Route: 9.6km
Duration: 3:30 hrs
Ascent/Descent: 350m

Directions: The way to the natural adventure

You can get there either via Rohrmoos or Pichl in the Preuneggtal. From the Strickbrücke, a toll road leads directly to the Ursprungalm. Alternatively, you can take the hiking bus from Planet Planai in Schladming, which goes via Rohrmoos to the Ursprungalm in the Preuneggtal.

From the car park to the Ursprungalm: A start into the natural splendour

The starting point of our journey is the Ursprungalm. This is where the newly constructed hiking trail begins, which leads us to the spectacular source of the Ursprungalmbach. The path winds its way across alpine meadows, over bridges, through remote rock formations and small forests.
The path is relatively steep at this point, which means that a certain level of physical fitness is required. The route is well paved with gravel and easy to manage. The path is also a manageable challenge for children, although it can be strenuous. However, it is not suitable for strollers. After a short time, especially in autumn towards the end of October, we reach the snow line.

This one-hour stage offers both steeper and flatter sections and finally leads us to the Alter Giglachweg on the Preuneggsattel.
After about an hour we reach the Giglachsee hut, which is unfortunately closed at this time of year.

Circular walk around the lake

We want to walk around the lake in a clockwise direction. The path initially leads slightly uphill and already opens up a first view of the majestic peaks and the clear Giglachsee.

With each clockwise step, the trail gradually climbs, while breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain landscape unfold. The gentle breeze and the silence of nature accompany hikers on this section, which never loses sight of the Giglachseehütte in the background.
After a short time we reach the Ignaz Mattis Hut. From this vantage point you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding mountain peaks. It is a perfect place to take a break and appreciate the beauty of nature and the distance you have covered.

The most beautiful part of the hike

We continue to walk around the lake, where we think the most beautiful part of the hike begins. From the Ignaz Mattis Hut Now it goes downhill again, almost to the lake shore. From the broad side of the lake you have the most beautiful view of the surroundings

We continue our tour and now walk along the lake shore. It is an indescribable experience to walk through the crunchy snow.

At the end of our walk around the lake, we reach the starting point again and begin the descent, which is now quick. At the end of the hike, we have a final look at the Ursprungalm, which is now ablaze with bright autumn colours and rewards us with its beauty.

Conclusion: Nature experience Giglachseen

The hike from the Ursprungalm to the Giglachseen not only offers scenic beauty, but also a varied route that will delight both experienced hikers and nature lovers. The newly created Ursprungquellweg opens the gates to a small paradise in the Styrian Alps.
