Location and Surroundings
The Giglach Lakes, comprising the Upper and Lower Giglach Lakes, form a striking natural backdrop in the Niedere Tauern range. As a central element of the western Schladminger Tauern, they attract hiking enthusiasts.
Located in the municipality of Schladming, nestled between the Schiedeck Ridge to the north and the Tauern Main Ridge to the south. Surrounded by majestic peaks such as the Styrian and Lungau Limestone Peaks and the Kampspitze, the Giglach Lakes offer a breathtaking setting. The Lower Giglach Lake stretches like a fjord over 1 km in a southwest-northeast direction at 1921 m above sea level, while the smaller Upper Giglach Lake is at 1930 m above sea level near the Preunegg Saddle.
Two mountain huts, the Ignaz-Mattis Hut and the privately run Giglachseehütte, invite hikers to rest and offer a magnificent view of the lake landscape.
