Arrival and Parking
Getting to Hochosterwitz Castle is straightforward, especially if you’re coming from the direction of the city of Sankt Veit an der Glan. There are ample parking spaces at the foot of the mountain, from where you can start your ascent to the castle. The well-maintained path offers a pleasant walk, surrounded by the picturesque landscape of Carinthia. It takes about 10 minutes to reach the lower entrance of the castle. Here, you have a choice. Either take the lift (for an extra charge) up, or ascend the castle on foot.
The Castle in General
Hochosterwitz Castle impresses not only with its location on a dolomite rock but also with its well-preserved architecture. The 14 fortified gates that secure access to the castle are a masterpiece of medieval craftsmanship. As you stroll through these gates up to the castle, remember that the journey itself is the goal. Entertainment, especially for children, is provided along the way. For instance, you can ride ponies, practice archery, sword fight, watch blacksmithing, or shop at the market.
On display are defensive towers, drawbridges, a castle chapel, portcullises, and archways. From the castle walls, you get a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.
Once at the top, you have the option to settle down in the shady inner courtyard for a meal. When we arrived, it was packed. Hardly anyone maintains the 1-meter distance due to Corona. Fortunately, we had already eaten beforehand. We also visit the armory and the museum, which don’t take more than 15 minutes.
The History
The history of Hochosterwitz Castle is as fascinating as its architecture. Originally built as a fortification during the Turkish invasions in the 11th and 12th centuries, it was rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. The castle has remained in the possession of the Khevenhüller family, who continue to maintain and preserve it to this day.
