The capital of Carinthia is especially worth a visit in summer. The street cafes in the beautiful old town are packed on hot days and you are never far from Lake Wörthersee. In the old town there are many small courtyards and tranquil alleys as well as the oldest pedestrian zone in Austria. This has existed since 1961.

Old Place
From the street cafes you have a wonderful view of the magnificent baroque facades of the houses. The most striking is the marble Plague Column from 1680, opposite is the old City Hall with its impressive arcaded courtyard.

At Alter Platz 31 you will find the House of the Golden GooseIt is the oldest house in the city and was first mentioned in documents in 1489.

For over 400 years, this building has been the seat of Carinthia’s rulers. The real attraction is on the top floor, the Great Coat of Arms HallThe walls of the hall are painted with 665 coats of arms of the Carinthian beaches.
If you walk from the Old Square through the popular shopping street Kramergasse towards “New Square”, you will come across the Wörtherseemandl, a legendary figure from Klagenfurt.
New place
Here you will find Klagenfurt’s landmark, the famous Lindwurm fountainThe dragon sculpture was made in 1590 from green chlorite slate, the sculptor is unknown.
Theaterplatz
There are several interesting buildings and museums around the square, most notably the beautiful City Theatre from 1910. Diagonally opposite is the Townhouse and a few steps further the Artists House.
From the city centre to Lake Wörthersee
The 4km long canal leads from the city center to the lake. The "Lend" has been around since 1535 and was originally built to make it easier to transport heavy loads into the old town. In winter, the canal is a popular ice skating rink.
Shortly before the lake you will come across the Minimundus with his miniature models. Likewise, the Happ Reptile Zoo and that planetarium worth a visit.
