Art with a View
Let’s be honest; for us, the absolute highlight was actually the view from the observation terrace, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains. Many visitors don’t even enter the museum but come for the view. Consequently, the museum was relatively empty. You can visit the terrace for free, by the way.
History and Architecture
The Museum of Modern Art is known not only for its art but also for its modern architecture. The museum was opened in 2004 and is considered by many a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. For us, it’s honestly a cool concrete block.
Museum of Modern Art Salzburg: A World-Class Collection
Modern art is a matter of taste, like so many things. Unfortunately, we have to admit that we’re not big fans, and that’s why the museum didn’t particularly appeal to us. We were back on the terrace relatively quickly.
Nevertheless, the Museum of Modern Art Salzburg has an extensive collection of artworks from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The collection comprises around 55,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, and installations.
Focus on Graphics and Photography
The museum’s collection originates from the graphic collection of the state of Salzburg, founded in 1975, and now encompasses about 31,000 works on paper. Since 1996, the museum has also managed the federal photo collection, which includes around 12,000 titles.
The Generali Foundation Collection
Another important part of the collection is the Generali Foundation Collection, entrusted to the museum in 2014, comprising around 2,100 works by international artists. The collection focuses on conceptual and media art.
