Tyrol: Hike to the Plansee viewpoint

Tyrol: Hike to the Plansee viewpoint

The Plansee is probably one of the most beautiful lakes in Tyrol. It became famous especially through Instagram, not least because of the viewpoint, the location of which we would like to reveal here.
The path is neither official nor signposted. Nevertheless, it is quite easy to reach and if you know where to go, it is not difficult to find.

How do you get to this viewpoint at Plansee?

We start our hike at 11:00 a.m. at the bridge right by the campsite. The first impression is enchanting. The water shimmers in a beautiful green and people jump from the bridge into the cool water. You cross the bridge and turn left towards Heiterwanger Lake. There is a signpost right on the other bank.

After a 15-minute walk along the lake shore you reach a very distinctive scree gullythat leads from the mountain into the lake. The avalanche of rubble is impossible to miss. But don't go up it yet!
Attention: The path to the viewing point comes just a few meters after the scree gully. A fairly narrow path now leads to the right into the forest.

The forest path leads steeply upwards in serpentines. The path is not particularly beautiful, but every now and then you have a view that gives you an idea of what awaits you at the destination. You should definitely wear hiking boots. After about 45 minutes you reach the first magnificent viewpoint.

But it gets even better. The last part of the hike to the viewing point at Plansee is the most strenuous, but it's worth it. It goes up a rock face again, the path is only secured with ropes. There are steep drops to the left and right. But don't worry, everyone can do it. Just don't rush!

After about 50 minutes you reach your destination and have a breathtaking Panorama of the Plansee and to the right the Heiterwanger See.

If you want, you can climb further, but we have heard from other hikers that the view doesn't get any better. In fact, the opposite is the case, as trees block the view again.

The end point is the hunter's hut, but that is also not very spectacular.

We make our way back home. Once we arrive at the bottom, another very well-known photo spot: the boathouse at the lower end of the lake near the campsite.
Attention: Entering the jetty at the house is prohibited. Nevertheless, photos are taken here again and again.

      Hello Julia.
I'm talking about the Seespitz campsite. There's a small bridge over the lake directly between the "small Plansee" and the Plansee. It's actually pretty easy to find. Don't be confused, you can't see it on Google Maps, but you can see it on Google Earth. We hope you enjoy your hike!

    Hello there,
Approximately how long did it take you to complete this hike? We come from the Baltic Sea and, as people from the lowland Tyrol, we would like to tackle it.
    Kind regards Sophie

Hello Sophie. From the car park it's about a 15 minute walk to the top, then another 30 minutes up the mountain. After about 45 minutes you're at the top of the lookout point.
In total I would plan about 2 hours, after all you want to enjoy the view 🙂

Hello, is there a photo of the place secured with ropes where it goes steeply down to the right and left...? I'm not sure if I can do that, as it's very narrow there. What exactly does "secured with ropes" mean? To hold on to, to click in or to limit the path?
    Thanks for a quick reply,
    VG Bert

Hello Bert, unfortunately we don't have one. The place isn't particularly dramatic, but you should wear good shoes and not be afraid of heights. You shouldn't go up there with small children. Kind regards

Do you know if you can see the sunrise or sunset there?
Is there a nice summit hike nearby (approx. 1000 meters in altitude) that can also be managed by sporty non-professional hikers without climbing experience?

    Kind regards
    Eve

Hello Eva. You look towards the west, so theoretically you should be able to see the sunset. But we haven't been there in the evening yet 😉
You can of course go further from that point, but we haven't done that ourselves. Hope the answer helps you anyway, best regards

Can you climb to the first viewpoint with children or is that too dangerous?
    Best regards and thanks

      Hello Steffi,
It is possible, but you need to be experienced. I wouldn't do it with small children, as the viewing point is not secure.
      Best regards,
      Paul
