The Literature Museum of the Austrian National Library is a true treasure for anyone interested in literature and culture. It is located in the heart of Vienna, in a historic building on Josefsplatz, and offers an insight into the rich history of Austrian literature. It opened in April 2017.
The museum extends over three floors and offers a variety of exhibitions and events.
In the On the first and second floors you will find a permanent exhibition on Austrian literary history since the end of the 18th century. Here you can discover texts by Johann Nestroy, Franz Kafka, Ilse Aichinger, Ingeborg Bachmann, Thomas Bernhard and Friederike Mayröcker. There are also amazing objects such as Peter Handke's walking stick or a uniform like the one worn by Arthur Schnitzler's "Lieutenant Gustl".
On the 2nd floor you will also find Franz Grillparzer's faithfully preserved study, which provides an insight into the author's everyday work and writing routine. "Grillparzer has proven that you can suffer a lot in Vienna," Franz Kafka said in a letter to his friend Grete Bloch in 1914.
