General
The park was officially opened on August 21, 1862 and immediately enchanted visitors with its variety of pretty shrubs, colorful flowerbeds and picturesque, winding paths. The city park delights with picturesque meadows, extensive water areas and artistic ornamental shrubs. Large avenue trees serve as protection along the Ringstrasse, which is almost unnoticeable in the park. The park covers an area of 95,000 m².
Within the park, several rare trees are protected, including a ginkgo, a Christ thorn, a pyramidal poplar and a Caucasian wingnut.
The shady meadows invite you to picnic and relax.
The monuments
The Stadtpark has the largest collection of monuments and sculptures of all Viennese parks. The most famous monument in the Stadtpark is undoubtedly the Strauss MemorialUnveiled in 1921, it features a bronze statue of Johann Strauss Jr. with a marble relief by Edmund Hellmer. Although the gilding was removed in 1935, it was restored in 1991.
Other monuments and sculptures in the city park include those of the composers Franz Schubert, Franz Lehar, Robert Stolz and Anton Bruckner, the painter Hans Makart and the former mayor of Vienna Andreas Zelinka, under whose government the park was designed.
There are also three drinking fountains and six ornamental fountains in the city park.
Leisure activities
For games and sports, the city park area in the 3rd district offers spacious playgrounds with water play facilities, sand play areas, slides, swings and see-saws. The playground is located on the opposite side of the Vienna River.
There is also a skate park for young visitors and ball courts for football and basketball enthusiasts.
Gastronomy
For a relaxing coffee break, the terrace of the Kursalons Hübner , which is open daily from 11 a.m. from March to mid-September. The Kursalon, a building constructed in 1867 in the Italian Renaissance style by Johann Garben, is not only a place for a relaxing break, but is also a popular location for balls and clubbing. You will find the Kursalon on the corner of Parkring and Johannesgasse.
The -Dairy- is a charming, villa-like building directly on the Vienna River, which was opened in 1903 as a milk drinking hall. Today it houses the renowned Steirereck restaurant, which is considered one of the best in Vienna for its exquisite cuisine.
