The Naschmarkt
The Naschmarkt is the largest and probably best-known market in Vienna. It starts in the city centre at Getreidemarkt (Secession) and extends westwards to the Kettenbrückengasse underground station. The market is located outdoors, with the approx. 120 market stalls, restaurants and bars fresh food and specialities from all over the world. Most of the products come from Austria, ex-Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, East Asia, Japan and China. Its flair is somewhat reminiscent of an oriental bazaar.
The stalls sell fruit, vegetables, spices, fish, meat, cheese, pastries and more.
However, the market has not been cheap for a long time, presumably because it is also very popular with tourists. Many a visitor has been ripped off here - so beware of the prices and weights. 100g often seems cheap, but when you add it up to a kilo, you may be in for a surprise...
Some restaurants have also established themselves as popular meeting places. But even these are not cheap. Accordingly, the area around the market is also becoming increasingly popular with restaurant owners.
Flea market
The flea market is located on the outskirts of the city, directly adjacent to the Naschmarkt. Every Saturday, antiques, clothing, artwork, household goods, used books, signs and records are sold here. As the stallholders are private individuals, you will also find lots of junk and sometimes even scrap. However, bargains can also be found at the flea market with high-quality old goods or antique furniture.
