Middle mountain is one of 3 villages in the Vorarlberg Kleinwalsertal, next to Hirschegg and Ritzlern. The Walsertal extends over an area of 97 km². It is approx. 15 km long and approx. 6.5 km wide. A total of 5,000 people live in Kleinwalsertal. Middle mountain lies at an altitude of 1215 metres above sea level,
What makes this Austrian valley so special is that it can only be reached by car via Germany. To get to the "rest" of Austria, you either have to hike or take a 45km car journey.
For this reason, even before the introduction of the euro, only D-Mark was used in Kleinwalsertal.
At the highest point of the village stands the Parish church of St Jodok with the oldest church tower in the KleinwalsertalThe Lourdes Chapel from 1897 is located directly behind it.
The Walmendingerhorn cable car, which we of course tested for you, also leaves from here. The mountain station is a wonderful starting point for hiking and skiing in winter.
From Schwendle, hiking trails lead into the Wildental valley and from Bödmen into the Gemsteltal valley.
There is also access to the ibex trail in winter.
