The Vienna Prater is a public area of about 6 km², which still consists largely of floodplains. When people outside Vienna talk about the “Prater”, they often only mean the famous amusement park in the Prater, the Wurstelprater, is meant. This is located at the north-western tip of the area between the Danube and the Danube Canal and, in terms of area, only makes up a very small part of the entire Prater area.
Our primary concern here is the WurstelpraterHere you will find another of Vienna's landmarks, namely the Giant Ferris Wheel. It was built in 1897 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I's accession to the throne and was one of the largest Ferris wheels in the world at the time.
There are also ghost trains, carousels, wave rides, roller coasters, mirror and laughter booths, autodrome, drop towers and many other family-friendly establishments. There are also a few arcades and other gambling establishments, as well as the famous “Praterdome” discotheque.
In contrast to many other amusement parks, admission to the Prater grounds is free; the entertainment consumed must be paid for at the individual showmen.
