The Vienna Prater is a public area of around 6 km², which to this day still largely consists of floodplains. When people speak of the “Prater” outside of Vienna, they often only refer to the famous amusement park in the Prater, the Wurstelprater. This is located at the north-western tip of the area between the Danube and the Danube Canal and only makes up a very small part of the entire Prater area.
We are also primarily concerned with the Wurstelprater. Another landmark of Vienna is located here, namely the Ferris wheel. It was built in 1897 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the throne of Emperor Franz Joseph I and at that time it was one of the largest Ferris wheels in the world.
There are also ghost trains, ring games (carousels), flying waves, high-view railways (roller coasters), cabinets of mirrors and laughter, autodrom, trap towers and many other family-friendly establishments. There are also some slot machines and other gambling establishments.
In contrast to many other amusement parks, entry to the Prater area is free; the consumed conversations are to be paid for with the individual showmen.
