About Villach
The traditional city with 61,000 inhabitants is considered by many to be the most beautiful city in Carinthia. The Wörthersee is just a stone’s throw away. However, locals prefer the nearby Faaker See. East of Villach lies the Ossiacher See and the Nockberge mountains. Villach’s local mountain is the Dobratsch. If you have time, we highly recommend a trip along one of Austria’s most beautiful panoramic roads. And what would Villach be without its famous carnival…
The main attraction of Carinthia’s second-largest city is the main square with its numerous street cafes. You can stroll wonderfully through the pedestrian zone during the day or in the evening.
Worth seeing here are the Hotel Post (now Palais 26), where Charles V once stayed, or the Paracelsushof with its double-storey Renaissance arcades.
The Highlights?
The Villach City Parish Tower (of the St. Jakob’s Parish Church)
It was built in the late 14th century. At 94m, the free-standing church tower is the tallest in Carinthia. You can even climb it via 239 steps. From the top, you have a magnificent panoramic view of Villach, the Dobratsch, and even the Landskron Castle Ruin at Lake Ossiach.
Another highlight is Villach’s main square, where you will find the historic City Hall and the beautiful Assumption of Mary Church. The main square is the ideal place to sit in one of the cozy cafes and watch the hustle and bustle of the city.
Church of the Holy Cross
The facade of this church looks more like a piece of confectionery. The building, built in 1751, shines in pink and white in the
sun. Both the exterior and interior of this baroque building are magnificent.
