The Hubertussee is located in the Halltal, about 15 kilometers northeast of Mariazell on the border between Lower Austria and Styria. The artificial lake impresses with its picturesque location, its historical background and the numerous opportunities to enjoy the surrounding nature.
The Hubertussee was donated in 1906 by Margret Krupp, the wife of the industrialist Arthur Krupp, as a gift to her husband on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary. The water of the Walsterbach was dammed to create an artificial lake. The lake was originally intended to supply the region with electricity and at the same time serve as a place for hunting and recreation. It was named after Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters.
The Hubertussee can be walked around on a comfortable circular path of around 2.6 kilometers. The walk leads along the shore through dense forests and repeatedly offers wonderful views of the crystal-clear water. The route is easy to walk and also suitable for families.
On the north bank is the Bruder Klaus Church, which was built between 1965 and 1967. This church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Flüe, who is considered the patron saint of Switzerland. The artistically designed windows depicting the life of the saint are particularly impressive.
In the immediate vicinity of the church is the Hubertus Chapel, which was also donated by the Krupp family. It offers a beautiful view over the lake and the surrounding forests and invites visitors to enjoy a moment of silence.
A visit to Lake Hubertus can be ideally combined with a rest at the Wuchtelwirtin The popular restaurant offers homemade sausages in various variations as well as hearty home-cooked meals. It is located not far from the large car park and is also easily accessible for hikers.
